bummer of a season
Things have just been generally weird this season. There was the good outcome of the election (minus the bad news that Prop 8 passed), and then that was about it…
-We were needlessly hopeful and excited and stressed about Portland, after N**e basically guaranteed Seth a job, then come to find out that they actually can’t even hire anyone because of their company-wide hiring freeze. They had basically asked us to make the stressful decision to move up there within a month, only to find out that it was all for naught.
-I had to make a tough decision not to go home for Thanksgiving… a really stressful decision that I hope will have been for the best. Though now we’re hosting it at our house with friends, which sounds a little stressful, but I think will somehow be more fun and less of a pain than San Jose.
-My car was hit the week before Portland by a dude who opened the door of his F150 into my car and then denied all liability and produced a fake witness after the fact for the insurance company…
-Now Seth’s car has decided to leak out all of it’s power-steering fluid onto the driveway, and has now been parked on the street for almost 2 weeks. To fix or not to fix?
-Seth’s Peugeot moped still is not running, and he may have to sell it at a loss. It’s been an endless source of frustration for him- as soon as one thing works, 2 things break. In fact he’s probably going to sell it today…
-Oh and Seth’s major client decided it wasn’t working out and let him go a couple of weeks ago, as did another smaller client this past week… it’s also the start of the dead season for graphic designers, so the chances of finding new clients until January are slim.
-Seth’s youngest sister Katie had an ovarian cyst that ruptured this week. She’s only about 16 so that was a bit of a scare. The doctors were going to treat her for appendicitis, but fortunately Seth’s dad demanded an MRI because her symptoms didn’t really jive with appendicitis.

I’m really hoping that Thanksgiving will see the beginning of a better season between then and Christmas, and on through the New Year.
Did get one bit of weird/good news today- a letter in the mail from some litigators who have a case against Bloomingdales and Macy’s which involves all former non-union hourly employees who worked for either store from 2001-2008, because they denied proper break and lunchtimes to their employees… I worked for Bloomingdales for like a-year-and-a-half during around 2003-2004 so I’d be entitled to settlement money if they find in favour of the plaintiffs. Sweet! Hopefully that works out.
My botany class is going well- I set the curve on the last test! It’s a hard class and I’ve not always been the greatest, most attentive student, so I’m proud enough of that achievement to brag. Plus, due to my high grades in that class, I may not have to take the final. Even more awesome. Brag brag brag. Sorry.
We are doing crafts for people this Christmas, since presents are too expensive. I would tell you what we’re making but it’s a secret. Mum’s the word. But Seth and I are collaborating on it, so it should be fun.

That is a lot of lame stuff. Don’t stress about Thanksgiving, though — we spent two Thanksgivings in LA with our friends and w/out our families, and they were both wonderful, even the one where Jen almost sliced her thumb off. Re: botany — do you feel any special connection with Neville Longbottom?
xie
ha! i’m into the idea of a mandrake root (which would probably be like ginseng to muggles because ginseng is only valued for it’s human-like shape, and therefore the chinese believe it’s a tonic for the whole body based on that! hooray for the doctrine of signatures) however, no special connection except that i <3 him in the last book. what a badass.

I’m so glad your Thanksgiving was a success (all that work is worth it when everyone enjoys themselves!)…and it certainly makes a house feel like a home to have people over making memories there. Speaking of which…;-) when you guys have some free time and feel like making the drive, Lee has a few weeks off at Christmas.
You’re in our thoughts, and we love the great Etsy leads you’ve been posting for us “Craigslist doldrums” inlanders.
