1. Character in a Wess Anderson film that you most relate to (if any): a tossup between Margot Tennenbaum and Peter Whitman
2. What is/are your favourite plant(s)? i love echeverias and euphorbias (very large families of succulents)
3. What fills you with dread? I fear oddly-timed phonecalls. It seems like our lives revolve around a series of important and oddly-timed phone calls: someone has fallen ill; someone is dead; someone has done a terrible thing; someone is born; etc. I am filled with anxiety if my mom or brothers call me at a strange hour.
4. Most influential creative person in your life? My dad. I’m not sure why but when he died somehow it inspired me to start drawing more on my own and later pursue a creative field. He was pretty good at drawing but decided to fix airplanes instead because that was his primary passion. He taught me to draw, and even let me use those “How to draw 50 ___” books, which are terrible when I think about them now.
5. Do you like cats better than dogs or vice versa? Why? This is hard. I like dogs a lot but I’ve never had one. Their loyalty and constant affection seems to make them an instant winner but on the other hand, I’m kind of a cat person. They are finicky, aloof, moody, devoted in their own ways… kind of like me. Also, I think the purr of a cat is one of the most satisfying and comforting things ever… dogs would totally beat cats if only they could purr.
6. What was the first thing you ever wanted to be? Why? The first thing I really remember wanting to be was a librarian. I just spent so much time at the library that it made sense.
7. What’s the best ice cream-truck song you’ve ever heard? The creepiest one was the theme from “The Pink Panther” which was so haunting on the ice-cream truck loudspeaker. It was playing mid-day in a quiet neighbourhood, and it was all echoey and sort of disturbing; if I had kids there’s no way in hell they would have gotten ice cream from that truck.
8. What is your favourite song by Simon & Garfunkel? If you don’t have one, why don’t you like them? I have 2 favourites: “The Only Living Boy in New York” and “The Boxer”
9. What is your stripper/pornstar name? (Name of your first pet + name of the first street you lived on): Freckles Russo
10. Do you have collections (deliberate or inadvertent)? What are they and why do you collect them? I have collections of mismatched vintage glasswear; silhouettes; vintage children’s books; ceramics things with human faces on them; vintage containers; and lots of vintage things for entertaining. I guess they’re all inadvertent collections. I must be drawn to them. I would like to collect old mourning jewelry but it’s too expensive.
11. Do you prefer rainy weather or sunny weather? Why? If I’m on foot, I like foggy weather because I like the thought that I’m walking through a cloud.
12. Favourite TV show theme song that is over 10 years old? Maybe the Sesame Street song because it makes me think of being a happy kid.
13. Favourite breakfast meal? Chilequiles, hands down. Though I’m a sucker for most Mexican breakfasts.
14. Best record you’ve bought recently: Mister Rogers [knows that] “You Are Special” (perhaps relating to question 12?) all I can say is that he sings in French! WTF?! So awesome.
