congratulations mr.obama

I have to say, that even as a non-voting pacifist I am quite happy that you were elected president. Perhaps only because I feared more the alternative, perhaps because I happily greet a historic moment in “our” nations history. Regardless I hope that you can seek justice in this nation, and this world, but I will forgive you if you fall short (as I would ask you to forgive me).

Christ called us to make peace in this world and I know I couldn’t do it from the the oval office, I will be praying that you can.

November 1st

November 1st, 2008 by xie

Well the good news is that it’s raining today… the bad news is that it’s still nearly 80 degrees.  So it really is like Southern California autumn today.  When we were in Portland last weekend, I was loving the weather.  It was about 60 degrees and breezy during the day, and about 40 degrees at night.  Like autumn should be!  We drove around a lot, and much of the time there were yellow and red leaves blowing down all around us, or gathered into big banks on the side of the roads.  It was lovely.  I loved being able to actually wear a sweater and/or jacket.

Last night for Halloween, Seth and I stayed at home.  Nothing seemed to be going on, and we are both recovering from colds we aquired in Portland.  I made a vegetarian pot pie (delish), and we watched “Dial M For Murder” and “Robocop”.  The first one Seth had never seen, and the second one I had never seen.  Dial M is such a classic, but Robocop was amazing…

In Praise of ‘The Big Picture’

October 17th, 2008 by boli

This is not a post about meta narratives or macro-theology or whatever heady thing, and it sure as hell ain’t about our economy. I just wanted to sing the praise of what is probably my favorite blog/rss feed ever.

The Big Picture

The Boston Globe has had the very good sense to start publishing aggregated photography based on relevant current events something like once a week. These aren’t your typical news photos, in fact they aren’t typical at all, this is world class photography with excellent curation and captions to boot. The thing that makes The Big Picture unique is that the pictures are well… really big. Big enough to really soak in the detail.

**EDIT**
WARNING: some of these images are pretty intense, and because they revolve around our (at times) very sad world. These images can also be very moving in a depressing way. Sorry Jessie! Since I look at photographs a lot I sometimes take this sort of thing for granted, my apologies.

Dude Stuff

October 16th, 2008 by boli

My birthday was on Tuesday and Xie got me some neat stuff and took me out for a nice Mexican dinner in true dewd fewd fashion, the restaurant Alegria, we both has the Budin de Monteczuma. Cheesy torillia-y and genuinely really satisfying. Later we went out for drinks at the Edendale Grille and I had some really well prepared gin gimlets on the rocks, that place has really nice interior by the way.

One of several cool presents I got was this beautiful knife made by Opinel. Opinel is one of the oldest pocket knife companies in the world and is still family owned and operated in France, I became intrigued with their business and old pocket knives in general about 3 months ago when I began researching the origins of lock blade knives and their relationship to penmanship in the 1600s. I am planning on doing a small research (and perhaps low budget publication) about knives and so this gift was just perfect.

Kennebunkport – Porter

September 28th, 2008 by boli

Its a hell of a name, but the beer is really quite delicious. I love porters the heavy savory thickness that take a while to drink but forces your sense of smell (what little i have) and taste to really dig in. I drink porters in favor a sit n’ sip policy. It’s not party beer, its chatting with friends beer.

I found this one at Trader Joes, so of course its pretty natural on the brewing scale and I have been told be reputable sources that almost all the beers that TJ’s carries are bound to be well brewed at the very least. I tried this one out despite it’s lackluster label (my standard operating procedure is to look for the pretty ones) and I was really pleasantly surprised. At $5.99 for a six pack its easy on the wallet too!

oh our aching backs

September 26th, 2008 by boli

xie and i have back pain, and especially right now. xie and i decided to ride our bikes to the lovely home of rupenconk last night for an office premier party, we have been enjoying riding our bikes in the evening while the air is cool and the streets a bit more empty. however, last nights trip ended in calamity. a rogue feline decided to dart out in front of xie as she rode down one of the minor hills near our home. being the animal loving person she is, xie SLAMMED on the the brakes with all her might and promptly flew to the ground hitting her head, shoulder, hip, ankle and thumb on her right side. thank god she wasn’t badly hurt… small amounts of road rash, some big bruises and a little case of the shakes.

Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator

September 23rd, 2008 by xie

Ok so just in case you haven’t seen this yet, this blogger made a Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator, in honor of the totally whack names that her kids have (ok mainly just Trig & Track)… so, my name was translated as “Claw Washout Palin” and Seth’s was… well… “Meat Notgay Palin”.  LOL

You have to do it and post your “Palin name” in the comment section of this post.  Please. Please.

sweet sassy molassy this sh*t is classy

September 21st, 2008 by boli

Lots of things have been happening. So many things I haven’t had the time to post about them all. We had a really fun birthday party for xie, which gave me the opportunity to make both sangria and my very own tonic water (for mixing with gin of course). It was a blast and in true alchy form our friend lee bakovsky (not to be confused with lee eddy spaghetti the meatballs are ready) brought xie a delicious bottle of beer (countless ther folks brought us wine too!). Lee is a renaissance man and excellent artist AND an excellent brewer of fine beers. Naturally we trust his taste.

konings hoeven quadrupal trappist ale was no disappointment. brown and nutty it is super rich and make my tongue tingle in all the right ways. i’m sure lee would have a more sophisticated way of describing this gastronomic wonder, but my cretinous mind can only say “hot damn i’ll take two!”.

high times

August 22nd, 2008 by xie

drinking Arnold Palmers (something so delicious, and surprisingly hard to say), reading comics on my computer. this is what i’ve been doing a lot of since school let out. that and contemplating my next hairdo (thinking of growing it out because i’m obsessed with the idea of braids, topknots, and side-ponytails). i’ve been making jewelry for Etsy, for myself, and for my friend alana. we don’t have a lot of money right now, so i’ve avoided shopping at thrift stores, in favour of selling off stuff that i already have cluttering the house. made a whopping $26 at Squaresville today selling a couple of things.. although it’s disheartening to think i could have had $42 in trade. cold hard cash seemed like the more sensible option. bought us lunch! i also finally finished this project last weekend…
